UPDATE: The Morning Prayer of March 15th will be cancelled.

Since several months, we organise a Morning Prayer service in the Martini Church in Groningen on the third Sunday of each month at 11:30 am. Next Sunday, on March 15th, which is the 3rd Sunday of the 40-day Lent season (the time of preparation for Easter), this will not be different. During the hour of this service, we try to bring to life some of the rich choral tradition from the Anglican church here in Groningen, accompanied by music played on the world famous Martini organ.

The Dutch Choral Singers, directed by Henk de Vries, will perform various choral works such as “Te Deum in B” by Charles Villiers Stanford and “Glorious and powerful God” by Charles Wood. As usual, there will also be a number of hymns for the congregation to sing together. The service will be ministered by Revd. Rudolf Oosterdijk and the organ will be played by Vincent Hensen-Oosterdijk.

The theme of this service is derived from the two Bible readings, from both of which we hear about the living water as a gift from the Lord. Whilst the people of Israel stay in the desert for forty years, freed from slavery in Egypt and making their journey towards the Promised Land, they are suffering from thirst and complain about it to their leader Moses. As a sign from the Lord, water flows out of a rock after Moses strikes it with his rod. In the Gospel of John, we read the story about Jesus, who encounters a Samarian woman who seeks to draw water from a well. Jesus speaks to her about the gift of God: whoever drinks from the living water, will never get thirsty again.

Special notice: until June 2020, our Morning Prayer services are held on the third Sunday of each month. After the summer holiday, starting September 6th, we will continue these Morning Prayers on the first Sunday of each month.

UPDATE: De Morning Prayer van 15 maart gaat niet door.

Sinds een aantal maanden vieren we op de derde zondag van iedere maand een Engelstalige Morning Prayer, om 11:30 uur in de Groninger Martinikerk. En aanstaande zondag 15 maart, de derde zondag van de veertigdagentijd (waarin we ons voorbereiden op Pasen) is dat niet anders. In ongeveer een uur proberen we, begeleid door het wereldberoemde Martiniorgel, iets van de beleving uit de rijke Engelse koortraditie ook in de Martinikerk in Groningen tot leven te brengen.

Het koor, the Dutch Choral Singers, onder leiding van Henk de Vries, zal diverse koorwerken ten gehore brengen, waaronder “Te Deum in B” van Charles Villiers Stanford en “Glorious and powerful God” van Charles Wood. Zoals gebruikelijk is er voor alle bezoekers volop gelegenheid mee te zingen met een aantal hymns. Voorganger in deze dienst is Rudolf Oosterdijk, en het orgel wordt bespeeld door Vincent Hensen-Oosterdijk.

Het thema van de viering is ontleend aan de beide Bijbellezingen, waarin het levende water als gave van God de verbindende schakel is. Tijdens het veertig jaar durende verblijf van het volk Israël in de woestijn, bevrijd uit de slavernij in Egypte en onderweg naar het Beloofde Land, klagen de mensen bij hun leider Mozes over de enorme dorst die ze lijden. Als teken van God laat Mozes water stromen uit een rots, nadat hij er met zijn staf op heeft geslagen. In het Evangelie naar Johannes lezen we over de ontmoeting van Jezus met een Samaritaanse vrouw die water komt putten bij een bron. Jezus spreekt met haar over de gave van God: wie van het levende water drinkt zal nooit meer dorst lijden.

N.B. Tot en met juni 2020 vinden de Engelstalige Morning Prayers plaats op de derde zondag van de maand. Na het zomerreces, vanaf 6 september gaan we door met onze Morning Prayers op de eerste zondag van de maand.
