Ever thought about encountering a unicorn in the Martini Church in Groningen?

On Sunday, June 4th 2023 at 11:30 a.m. you are very welcome to attend our Morning Prayer service in the tradition of the Anclican Church. In addition to a few (short) Bible texts (from the book of Exodus and the gospel of John), we will read a poem written by the Polish-American poet and winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Literature, Czesław Miłosz. Although the title of the poem, Incantation, may sound somewhat peculiar, the poem itself reads as an elaborate comparison of good and evil, and it distinctly chooses the side of the good. It is about Truth and Justice written with capital letters, as opposed to lie and oppression in lowercase. And look for the unicorn hidden somewhere in the verse.

The Morning Prayer service will be ministered by Revd. Ivo de Jong. The choir participating in the service will be the Dutch Choral Singers directed by Henk de Vries. The organ will be played by Carlos Julián Fernández Bollo. Language: alternately English and Dutch.

Ooit gedacht nog eens een eenhoorn tegen te komen in de Martinikerk in Groningen?

Op zondagochtend 4 juni 2023 om 11:30 uur willen we je van harte verwelkomen in de Morning Prayer viering in de traditie van de Anglicaanse kerk. Naast enkele (korte) Bijbelpassages (uit Exodus en uit het evangelie van Johannes) lezen we in deze dienst een gedicht van de Pools-Amerikaanse dichter Czesław Miłosz, die in 1980 de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur heeft gewonnen. Het gedicht heeft misschien een wat eigenaardige titel, Incantation, oftewel Bezwering, maar in de tekst van het gedicht wordt een uitgebreide vergelijking gemaakt van goed tegenover kwaad, en wordt overduidelijk voor het goede gekozen. Het gaat over Waarheid en Rechtvaardigheid, geschreven met hoofdletters, tegenover leugen en onderdrukking in het klein geschreven. En probeer die eenhoorn eens op te sporen, ergens in het vers.

Voorganger in deze viering is Ivo de Jong. Met medewerking van de Dutch Choral Singers onder leiding van Henk de Vries. Organist is Carlos Julián Fernández Bollo. De voertaal is afwisselend Engels en Nederlands.
