Earlier this year we have taken the initiative to organise a so-called Morning Prayer in the Martini Church in Groningen on a regular basis, usually on the third Sunday of the month at 11:30 am. During the hour of this service, we try to bring to life some of the rich choral tradition from the Anglican church here in Groningen, accompanied by music played on the world famous Martini organ. This way we hope you will have a pleasant time with us, whether you’re a local resident, a regular visitor of the Martini services, or a guest in our town from abroad.

Next Sunday, on November 17th, this type of Morning Prayer will be celebrated for the third time already in Groningen. Among other works, the Te Deum and Jubilate in C by Charles Villiers Stanford and “O for a closer walk with God” – also by Stanford – are listed on the programme. There will also be several hymns that everyone can sing along.

Een paar maanden geleden zijn we gestart met het organiseren van de zogenoemde Morning Prayers in de Groninger Martinikerk, op de derde zondag van de maand om 11:30 uur. In ongeveer een uur proberen we, begeleid door orgelmuziek gespeeld op het wereldberoemde Martiniorgel, iets van de beleving uit de rijke Engelse koortraditie ook in Groningen tot leven te brengen. Daarmee hopen we jullie, zowel Groningers en regelmatige bezoekers van de Martinidiensten als buitenlandse gasten in onze stad, een aangenaam uurtje te bezorgen.

Komende zondag, 17 november, vieren we alweer voor de derde keer de Morning Prayer op deze manier. Op het programma staan onder meer het Te Deum en Jubilate in C van Charles Villiers Stanford en “O for a closer walk with God”, eveneens van Stanford. Daarnaast zijn er hymns die iedereen kan meezingen.

Have you missed the first Morning Prayer in de Martini Church in Groningen on May 19th? Well, here’s another chance to attend a special Morning Prayer service (also known as Choral Matins) on Sunday, September 15th, starting at 11:30 am. This Anglican-style service will be held in the English language, just like the previous time in May.

Thematically, we will address the concept of sin and having repentance of one’s sins. This concept is the link between the two Bible readings: from the book of Exodus, about God’s response to the people of Israel who had worshipped a golden calf, and from the Gospel of St. Luke, where Jesus tells the parable of the shepherd leaving behind his 99 sheep in order to retrieve the one lost sheep, followed by the parable of the woman retrieving the silver coin she had lost.

The officiant in this service will be Matty Metzlar. The choir participating in the service will be the Dutch Choral Singers with choir master Henk de Vries. The organ will be played by Vincent Hensen-Oosterdijk.

Voor wie de eerste Morning Prayer in de Groninger Martinikerk op 19 mei jl. gemist heeft, is er op zondag 15 september om 11:30 uur opnieuw gelegenheid om deze vorm van Engelstalige oecumenische viering volgens de Anglicaanse traditie, ook wel Choral Matins genoemd, bij te wonen.

Het thema van de viering sluit aan bij de begrippen zonde en berouw. Dit vormt de verbindende schakel tussen de lezingen uit Exodus, over hoe God reageert op de aanbidding van een gouden kalf door het volk Israël, en uit het Evangelie naar Lucas, waarin Jezus gelijkenissen vertelt over de schaapherder die zijn 99 schapen achterlaat om dat ene verloren schaap te zoeken en terug te vinden en over de vrouw die dolgelukkig is dat ze een zilveren muntje, dat ze was kwijtgeraakt, weer terugvindt.

Voorganger in deze viering is Matty Metzlar. Met medewerking van de Dutch Choral Singers onder leiding van Henk de Vries en organist Vincent Hensen-Oosterdijk.

Zondag 19 mei om 11:30 uur is er een Engelstalige oecumenische Martinidienst volgens de Anglicaanse traditie. Deze Morning Prayer (ook wel genoemd Matins) is nog nooit gehoord in de Martinikerk in Groningen. Evenals de Evensongs zit ook de Morning Prayer vol muziek. Het verschil is dat deze alleen op zondagen wordt gehouden en de muziek een Te Deum en een Jubilate bevat.

De dienst is een ‘pilot’ om uit te zoeken of een maandelijkse Martinidienst in het Engels met een nieuw op te richten Universiteitskoor (Groningen University Choir) ook internationale bezoekers en meer studenten kan trekken. Daarom zijn alle onderdelen van de dienst in het Engels.

Voorganger is Sam Van Leer, studentenpastor en predikant bij de Grace Anglican Church in Groningen. De dienst wordt muzikaal begeleid door Dutch Choral Singers onder leiding van dirigent Henk de Vries en vaste organist van het koor Vincent Hensen-Oosterdijk. Er is kinderopvang aanwezig tijdens de viering.

On Sunday May 19th, at 11:30 am in the Martini Church in Groningen, there will be an English-language Morning Prayer (in the Anglican-style). It will be the first time ever that this type of service will be held in the Martini Church. Just like the well-known Choral Evensongs, services of Morning Prayer in the Anglican tradition (also known as Matins) are full of music as well. The difference is that Morning Prayers are held on Sundays only, and that the music includes a Te Deum and a Jubilate.

We are offering a trial Morning Prayer service on May 19th to see how attractive this can prove to be for international students and others in Groningen. In addition, the Chants Foundation would like to consider launching a University Choir in Groningen!
